Boycott Samsung. Welcome

Let me start by filling you in on the reasons we are recommending a boycott of this unamerican giant. We purchased a SAMSUNG HL-R5678W hi-def 1080p DLP, 56" tv in the summer of 2006. It wasn't without reservation, it is a high dollar purchase and as a family of 5, we don't ordinarily have an extra $3,000.00 laying around. I was reluctant to spend this kind of money on ANY tv. I don't see the value in them myself. Anyway, remember when you were a kid, your parents would go to the local electronics or department store and buy a new tv. Usually it would cost a few hundred bucks at most, last well over 10 years and never give you any trouble. Those days are over my friends! We dropped $2,700.00 hard earned greenbacks on the new set and just as the manufacturer 12 month warranty passed it started to cause problems. The screen started displaying psychodelic like colors and all the color was scrambled. We put in a call to Samsung USA and were directed to a local repair shop. Their tech came to our home and said he wasn't sure what was wrong, it could be a couple of things and they would have to order parts. 4 weeks later and $100 lighter in my wallet for the service call, we tried calling the repair shop as we had not heard from them. After 3 more weeks of phone calls, we finally got to speak with someone as they never returned our calls from the weeks past. The owner advised us that they were no longer servicing Samsung and couldn't order the parts. So we went around with them a little and eventually got our $100 back. We again called Samsung and advised them of our situation. After some back and forth, they finally agreed to provide the required part(s) at no charge, even though the official warranty had expired. A nice gesture of good faith if nothing else. So, we tried to get another shop to come up and diagnose the problem. Come to find, nobody in our area, or within a hundred miles was prepared to service Samsung any more as they were all dropping them as a manufacturer. OK sound the alarm! Here we are, a modest living family of 5 with a $2700.00 paperweight in our tv room with no answers from the manufacturer. After reading on the ecoustics forum about the DLP tv's, I started to feel worse about our purchase. Apparently the DMD board, or computer processor for the whole tv had taken a dump and would cost around $1,000.00 just for the part. Now, I don't know about you, but for me, having to spend $1000, or roughly 30% of the capital purchase amount each year or so on a "consumable" just isn't good enough. I read there are many, many owners in the same position as us. Samsung were becoming less helpful each time we called. I read a white paper from Texas Instruments, the company who manufactures the DLP chipset and they estimate that the chipset should last in excess of 100,000 hours. I estimate that after 15 months of regular family viewing, we have maybe, maybe 1,500 hours on our set. LAst time I took a math class, 1,500 was considerably less than 100,000! The last call to Samsung customer service resulted in their representative advising us to take the tv to Best Buy and have them fix it. At our expense of course! We told them we would start a boycott and blog in addition to taking the tv to a remote area near our hometown, destroy it with an unnamed incendiary devise, videotape the entire demise of this piece of garbage and post the video on the web for the world to see. Samsung's responce was no surprise. Their rep said, OK then I will make a note of that maam. Talk about arrogant! I work in a customer service business and could never imagine turning my back on a customer, even if the official warranty is up. Do your homework folks, don't buy Samsung and think seriously about any DLP set. Do your research online through the forums etc. and make sure you can actually get customer service for the one you buy. We will be posting pictures online here and elsewhere to show you what a "great" picture these sets have. Samsung have commited, and continue to commit fraud, or gaining financial benefit by deception. It must stop and stop now!
In the meantime, we welcome any comers to commence a class action against Samsung for selling what is clearly unfit for the intended purpose and failing to resolve the hundreds, if not thousands of problems these expensive boxes of junk are known for.
